2015 8th Grade Field Trip Project
In this project your team will come together to plan a field trip to a cultural attraction here in the great state of North Carolina. Your field trip needs to be a day trip, or a 2 day 1 night trip. You can choose to do either one, but the overnight trip will require the added step of getting hotel accommodations. You will also be responsible for the planning of meals, transportation and coming up with a total cost. You will need to research real restaurants, real ticket prices, and real hotel costs because we will be going on several of your trips.
I am a firm believer of students understanding the importance of historic sites and places. These areas are pieces of our culture and history, and should be used in understanding the world we live in today. For this reason, I have asked the principal for permission to begin a field trip program for inspired 8th graders at Chestnut Grove. These field trips are beyond the ordinary curriculum, and due to the number of trips I plan on taking those who want to go on, we have to plan them for Saturdays, or weekends. This means giving up your time to learn more about what we are discussing, but in the end it will make you better students and I believe better members of our society.
I have divided our curriculum into several units, and it is my plan to take students on one trip per unit. The trips you plan should relate to a topic from one of these units. I will list the time periods with each unit, and you can look for sites to go on trips. I would like one per unit, so if yours is the only one for a given unit, and is reasonable, it means yours will be chosen. What does that mean? Well, your names are attached to the trip and you will get to go for free (or at a reduced cost if it is an overnight trip).
Unit 2 – Revolution 1754-1783
Unit 3 – A New Republic 1784-1848
Unit 4 – A House Divided 1849-1877
Unit 5 – The Gilded Age 1878-1913
Unit 6 – The Early Twentieth Century 1914-1929
Unit 7 – Depression and War 1930-1945
Unit 8 – Twilight Struggle 1945-1989
Unit 9 – American Equality 1954- 1973
Unit 10 – Modern Times 1974 – Present
You will need to create a power point or prezi that has pictures for your trip idea. Your presentation needs to be accurate and explain how this field trip will benefit students learning about N.C. and/or U.S. history. Make sure you have the following in your presentation:
· An itinerary (schedule)
· The cost of the trip (break it down so we see how you calculated it for each item on the itinerary)
· The connection of the site to the unit of study
· Locations for eating (sleeping if it is an overnight trip)
Good luck! This project will be due on Tuesday, September 2nd. By the following Friday I will announce the field trips that won, and the tentative dates.
